His Achy Breaky Socialists’ Heart

Sami Kent, a 19-year-old columnist for the Guardian, struggles to admit that Hugo Chavez isn’t everything he thought he was (back when the kid was 15). It’s not a terrible op-ed, but it’s kind of amusing how seriously the kid takes himself. I also like how Kent could watch Chavez for years only to discover very late in the process that what he’d taken for socialism was in fact nationalism. Whenever I point out that in most cases nationalism is socialism and socialism is nationalism, I get grief from lefties who insist that the two have nothing to do with one another. In fact, it’s often very hard to tell them apart because they’re so indistinguishable, at least when you’re looking at socialists or nationalists in power.

The best part, however, is the comments. Because, you see, in their hearts, Guardian readers still know Chavez is right!
