Andrew Sullivan and a reader are singing the glories of Oliver Wendell Homes Jr. as a beacon of tolerance. Of course, Holmes believed it was perfectly fine for the State to sterilize “defective” and degenerate citizens who didn’t live up the State’s ideal. But, other than that (and a few other things), he was a real champion of tolerance.
