I watched the rebooted version of Sherlock Holmes with the family last night. I don’t mind the reimagination of the title character from Arthur Conan Doyle’s sleuth to Robert Downey Jr.’s action hero. It’s like a Frank Sinatra song covered by the Ramones–you can appreciate each for what it is. Yet the story itself was kind of flat. It should have been National Treasure transported into London’s gaslight crime era. Instead, it was another blockbuster that probably sounded great during its Hollywood pitch session but didn’t really hold together as its makers tried to turn a concept into a reality. I didn’t hate the film or anything. I was just hoping for more.
