Home of the Brave

The Pentagon has now agreed to notify members of Congress when a constituent is awarded one of the highest heroism awards. Senator Rick Santorum has been seeking the notifications for over a year so our troops’ bravery can be more widely acknowledged. Frustrated with bureaucratic foot-dragging at the Pentagon, he personally delivered a letter about his request and DOD’s stalling to Secretary Rumsfeld in August. It worked. The notifications will only cover the Medal of Honor, the services’ individual crosses and the Silver Star, but it’s a start. We’ll now see if other members of Congress are as interested in publicizing the heroism of service members as Senator Santorum is. Will selfless bravery be as worthy of press releases as self-serving earmarks are?
