House Intelligence Committee chairman Mike Rogers categorically rejected the idea of granting amnesty to National Security Agency whistleblower Edward Snowden. The NSA official heading the Snowden task force, Rick Leggett, told 60 Minutes last week that Snowden stole so much valuable information from the agency that he favors negotiating with him to secure the remainder of the data.
“I do think he should come home, I’d personally pay for his plane ticket,” Rogers told ABC’s George Stephanopoulos. But he precluded any negotiation with Snowden, pointing to the open letter he wrote this week to the Brazilian people in which the whistleblower offered to help investigate the U.S. government’s surveillance of Brazilian citizens. “He has contacted a foreign country and said ‘I will sell you classified information for something of value,’” he said. “He has traded something of value for his own personal gain that jeopardizes the national security of the United States. We call that treason.”
