House Passes Bill Defunding Obamacare

The House just passed its continuing-resolution bill that defunds Obamacare by a margin of 230 to 189, with two Democrats joining the GOP and one Republican voting no, sending the bill to Senate majority leader Harry Reid and the Democratic-controlled upper chamber.

House leadership just held a rally in the Rayburn room of the Capitol where dozens of GOP lawmakers cheered heartily as Speaker John Boehner, Majority Leader Eric Cantor, and others led speeches about the many perils of Obamacare.

Lawmakers were loudest as Cantor ran through a list of four vulnerable Senate Democrats up for reelection in 2014, noting the deleterious impact of the health-care law in their states and questioning how they will vote.

“Senate Republicans have promised to leave no stone unturned fighting this bill and all of us here support that effort. We’re calling on Senate Democrats to do the same thing. And I want to know where Senator Mark Pryor stands on protecting the middle class,” Cantor said to start it off. He went on to also highlight Senators Kay Hagan of North Carolina, Mary Landrieu of Louisiana, and Mark Begich of Alaska.

The bill sets up a showdown with Reid and President Obama and comes as the House GOP is also finalizing its plans to make major demands for the debt-ceiling increase that will be needed in October.
