The Housing Question

Here is the actual exchange between McCain and the Politico interviewer (click here for audio):

Politico: How many houses do you and Mrs. McCain have?

McCain: I think, uh, I’ll get, I’ll have my staff get to you and talk to you about that, it’s condominiums, it’s where they’re—I’ll have them get to you.

This frankly sounds less like a guy who has too many houses to count than a guy with money invested in various places who doesn’t do his own accounting for it and who’s afraid to give the wrong answer and get called on it. It would be interesting to know what condominiums he has in mind. Property the McCains own and rent out? In any case, this is hardly Bush Sr. at the checkout counter. It’s a guy who knows the answer is complicated and is worried about a gotcha question.

Does that mean McCain has more money than most of us do? Sure sounds that way. Does it mean he’s an out of touch plutocrat? That’s not what I get from this. Does it mean Barack Obama should be president? Nope.

Let’s get serious.
