How Dare Anyone Tamper with the Hallowed Handiwork of the Great Gaylord Nelson in 1959?

I write today about President Obama as the leader of reactionary liberalism, in light of the new challenge from Republican reformers like Scott Walker and Paul Ryan. On PBS last night, there was a perfect expression of the Left’s defensive devotion to mid-20th century government structures and practices. Mike Lipp, President of Madison Teachers Inc., read a statement saying teachers are willing to talk about budget issues “but to include gutting law that was put into place in 1959, signed by the great Gaylord Nelson, granting public employees the right to collectively bargain, is ludicrous.” Ah, yes, why would anyone in 2011 think of changing a government practice put in place in 1959?
