One way, I would suggest, is that he uses language to manipulate people into defining their patriotism in terms of him and his political agenda rather than in terms of the nation as a whole and its political processes and institutions.
For example, he might say such a thing as “I will not allow our country to be sold out by anti-Trump haters in the dying newspaper industry.”
