The University of North Carolina–Wilmington is right in hurricane alley and has had a couple of hits in recent years. It has also had to deal with the COVID mess and with freedom of speech issues. On that, the school has improved, attaining a “green light” ranking from FIRE, having eliminated all policies that could punish people in the university community for their speech.
In today’s Martin Center article, Shannon Watkins interviews the outgoing chancellor, Jose Sartarelli, discussing those and other issues.
The university’s support for freedom of speech sounds good, but Sartarelli never explains why it has not adopted the Chicago Principles. My guess is that while Sartarelli himself is not a devoted “progressive,” there are many faculty and administrators at UNCW who are and pushing for the Chicago Principles would stir up a revolt. Maybe even an insurrection.
