How Run Gen Z Is Identifying the Next Generation of Conservative Leaders

Lisa Nelson, CEO of the American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC), joins National Review‘s Haley Strack for a discussion at the Run Gen Z One Generation Conference in Clearwater, Fla., January 17, 2026. (Emma Foley/National Review)

Lisa Nelson, the CEO of the American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC), understands the importance of fostering new generations of conservative leaders. She helped found the National Review Institute to bring to life the conservative principles Bill Buckley published in his magazine. As NRI’s first executive director, she helped strengthen our position in the broader conservative movement, educating leaders, politicians, and readers about NR’s mission.

Now, she’s helping raise up the next generation of conservative elected officials. ALEC’s 501(c)(4) arm, ALEC Action, hosts Run Gen Z, a project dedicated to identifying young conservatives interested in elected office or politics.

National Review was proud to sponsor Run Gen Z’s annual conference last weekend, where we sat down with Nelson to discuss how Run Gen Z shepherds the movement’s rising leaders. Readers may be interested to hear Nelson’s strategy for how to educate and support individuals focused on limited government and free markets.
