Speaking of the full moon, next week sees the release of The Wolfman on DVD, with about 15 minutes of extra footage in the “director’s cut.” I’m sorry to report that the movie wasn’t scary, the story was kinda predictable, and actor Benicio del Toro looked bored throughout. The special effects were decent: I liked the transformation scenes (cool clip here). Yet the film as a whole, pitched as a reboot of the 1941 werewolf movie starring Lon Chaney Jr., falls into the category of what Stefan Dziemianowicz has called the “vampire in wolf’s clothing” approach to cinematic lycanthropy. The Wolfman isn’t a bad movie. It’s solidly okay. But I was hoping for more.
