Huckabee 2012: The Main Obstacle

William Kristol asks of Mike Huckabee, “[W]hen he gets in, why won’t he be the front-runner?” I’m always surprised that so few people comment on how poorly Huckabee did among non-evangelical voters last time around. In Iowa, New Hampshire, Michigan, South Carolina, and Florida, his percentages among these voters were 14, 6, 8, 14, and 14, respectively. There are a lot of evangelical Republicans, but not enough that he can win the nomination unless he does a lot better among other types of voters too. (Romney’s underappreciated obstacle: There are a lot of rich Republicans, too, but not enough of them.)
