So even when, as in the case of Hezbollah, it should be obvious to a blind man that the Syrians and the Iranians are totally in cahoots, it is nonetheless possible for our Syrian “experts” to gainsay the obvious and whisper to the New York Times that we can somehow separate the Syrians from the terror masters in Tehran, and have the son of Assad play a constructive role in “the search for peace.”
I hadn’t read the op-ed page of today’s WSJ, where Edward Luttwak calls for inviting Syria back into Lebanon, the better to control Hizbollah.It’s always difficult to know when he’s pulling your leg (just before Gulf War I, he predicted 40,000 casualties on our side. Later he said he was kidding.), but whatever it is, it’s a fine example of the sort of wrong-headed expertise I was talking about.
