I’ve seen respected voices argue that Ukraine should be invited to join NATO. I’ve seen respected voices argue that the U.S. and its allies do not have a strong interest in ensuring Ukrainian independence from Russia. I’ve seen candidates declare that they’re divided, or that they feel the need to study the issue more.
I don’t think I’ve ever seen a major presidential candidate — much less a front-runner! – declare that he doesn’t really care:
CHUCK TODD: So you wouldn’t allow Ukraine into N.A.T.O.?
DONALD TRUMP: I would not care that much to be honest with you. Whether it goes in or doesn’t go in, I wouldn’t care.
CHUCK TODD: So –
DONALD TRUMP: If it goes in, great. If it doesn’t go in, great.
