I honestly think this contention that the media is inciting violence and racism to be either one of the dumbest arguments we’ve seen in a long time or one of the most cynical, or both. McCain has done nothing dishonorable or illegitimte on this score. Meanwhile the Obama campaign and the media have been playing up this nonsense at every opprtunity, littering the field with race cards. Whatever strategy McCain has picked (and he’s picked many) has resulted in charges of or chin-pulling about racism.
I have more to say, but I just remembered I need to run out for a few (heading to Fox). So I’ll save the rest of a long post for later. In the meantime, here’s my column on this very point. It ran in yesterday’s LA Times and, as you might suspect, the reader response was, uh, energetic.
