It would be a nice goal for 2026 not to have this rant about Donald Trump calling people “garbage” be relevant every week.
The president’s social-media post about Rob Reiner on Monday has been pretty widely criticized — more than most of his despicable comments about human beings. That’s probably because, rather than a group of people conveniently dismissed as undesirables in the U.S., with Rob Reiner, we have a face, and lines from When Harry Met Sally memorized (or at least a not-family-friendly scene in a diner remembered).
The reprehensible post, of course, seems to have totally gotten wrong how and why he was allegedly killed by his son — there’s no reason to think it was about politics. It also demonstrated the inconsistency of this administration when it comes to human life.
During the same week when his administration designated fentanyl a weapon of mass destruction, he overlooked the seemingly clear drug addiction (and likely mental illness?) aspects of the murders of Reiner and his wife.
I loved Meathead. All in the Family is basically the goal. We disagree, and we love.
Well, reverse order, maybe, better.
People are not garbage. No one deserves to die because of their politics — even if they don’t like Donald Trump. Everything is not about Donald Trump, and the damage drugs wreak on youth and lonely, angry, sick young men is legion. Combatting the plague of addiction is not an ideological issue — parents who vote Democrat and parents who vote Republican have lost children to it. And now a beloved actor and director has been murdered, along with his wife. And it would be good to have a president mature enough to realize that people who once held – maybe inexplicably — pro-life hopes for him will get over him if he does not read the room and realize there is still decency left in America.
And pro-life supporters who are not completely fatigued by him — not just the language, but the casting aside of pro-life goals (like ending abortion in America): Please stop excusing him by calling him “the most pro-life president.” Pro-lifers don’t speak the way he does. And we know abortion is evil, and women and families deserve better than abortion, and it is the human-rights struggle of our lives.
And, by the way, this is hysterical:

God rest the souls of Rob and Michele Singer Reiner. And, do pray for his family — especially their daughter, who evidently found them dead. What an awful trauma.
