If You’re Losing, Euphemize

Here’s a tweet from CNN on a new law that has been adopted in Florida:

Florida lawmakers have sent to the desk of GOP Gov. Ron DeSantis a slate of bills that will alter the lives of transgender people in Florida – including their access to health care and everyday amenities.

As is made clear in the piece to which the tweet links, the “health care” referenced here refers to “children” being given “prescriptions that block puberty hormones or sex-reassignment surgeries.” So why not say that off the bat? Why abstract it out to such a ridiculous degree? Why strip all the detail out?

I’ll tell you why. Because of this, as reported today in the Post:

Clear majorities of Americans support restrictions affecting transgender children, a Washington Post-KFF poll finds, offering political jet fuel for Republicans in statehouses and Congress who are pushing measures restricting curriculum, sports participation and medical care.

Most Americans don’t believe it’s even possible to be a gender that differs from that assigned at birth. A 57 percent majority of adults said a person’s gender is determined from the start, with 43 percent saying it can differ.

Yeah, and do you know what those people don’t like as a result? Elective double-masectomies for teenagers, that’s what. Hell, they don’t even like puberty blockers for minors:

The Post-KFF poll found significant opposition to gender-affirming medical care for children and teens. Nearly 7 in 10 adults said they oppose allowing children ages 10 to 14 access to medication that stops the body from going through puberty, and nearly 6 in 10 oppose giving 15- to 17-year-olds access to hormone treatments.

CNN knows this, which is why, when it is reporting on states that have passed laws banning these treatments, it deliberately hides the ball. “Access to health care” sounds nice. “Cutting off kids’ penises” does not. Which one does CNN choose? It chooses the one that the activists prefer. Why? Because it understands all too well that to tell the truth would be utterly disastrous for its cause.
