Illinois Urging Thousands to Reapply for Insurance if They Think They Were Wrongly Sent to Medicaid

Illinois officials are contacting thousands of Prairie State residents to urge them to redo their health-insurance applications if they think HealthCare.gov incorrectly sent them to Medicaid.

Over 30,000 Illinois residents who applied for insurance through HealthCare.gov may be eligible for Medicaid. According to Illinois Department of Insurance spokesman Mike Claffey, some believe they were erroneously referred to the program.

Officials said those who wish to start over should begin with Get Covered Illinois, a screening tool run by Illinois, which uses simple questions to help consumers determine if they meet Medicaid’s requirements and will send them to HealthCare.gov or the state’s Medicaid site. If the tool directs them to the former, officials say consumers should apply with a new account created with a new e-mail.
