You may have gotten the impression from a lot of the coverage that an increasing number of Republicans have gotten on board with comprehensive immigration legislation as they have grown more worried about the Hispanic vote and as proponents have worked hard to woo Republican legislators. A smaller percentage of Republicans in the Senate voted for the bill yesterday, though, than did in 2006 (when it passed the Senate and died in the House). The real change from that time is that Democratic opposition to this legislation has disappeared–objections to guest-worker programs and concern about the impact of higher immigration on low-end wages have melted away.
