Immigration and Conservatives

I agree with John that conservatives can hold differing views on immigration policy and should debate these views civilly. Restrictionists shouldn’t question the patriotism of proponents of continuous mass immigration, as too many of them do; and the latter should not call the former “xenophobes,” as too many of them do–and as the Journal does too often. Kathryn’s correspondent was right about that. And I don’t think that it quite captures the fervor of the Journal’s editorialists to say that they favor a “more open immigration policy”: They have repeatedly called for a constitutional amendment declaring that “There shall be open borders.”
