In Other Words, Lawfare Works

This is the New York Times gloss on an audio commentary from Michelle Cottle:

The G.O.P. has a Donald Trump money problem. The former president is facing multiple indictments, and fighting those legal battles hasn’t been cheap. Unfortunately for Trump — and the Republican Party — big donors have noticed and are losing interest in filling the G.O.P.’s draining coffers. That means trouble for states like Michigan and Arizona, which are in desperate need of party money for down-ballot races.

These indictments didn’t auto-generate. That they’d be a drain on Trump’s resources at a time when he was running for president was foreseeable, and presumably foreseen. Sure, it would have been better for the GOP to nominate someone else, but let’s not pretend that the people who brought these cases didn’t have agency and didn’t know what they were doing.
