Rick: I did not put “Cardinal Newman” in quotes; had I done so, that would have indicated that those were the actual words of the inscription. (It is actually signed “JHN.”) A letter signed “Beaconsfield” is helpfully described as being from Disraeli; one signed “E. Pacelli” as being from Pius XII.
