Without wishing to descend to anything so vulgar as Andrew Sullivan-style “I couldn’t put my own book down!” auto-rave book-plugging in The Corner, Derb a few days ago opined that my tome was a seething morass of contradictions – advocating small government at home but big muscular assertive neo-imperialist interventionism abroad. I don’t happen to think that’s contradictory, and, as I’m sure even Derb might concede, it’s a whole lot less contradictory than the contradictions the Republicans wound up running on – bloated porked-up entitlements-a-go-go big government at home and tentative half-hearted thankless defensive policing operations in Iraq. My book does a much better job of framing domestic issues in a time of war than Congressional Republicans did, and the GOP urgently needs to read it. Okay, now I am sounding like Andrew Sullivan, so I’ll quit before I elope to Provincetown with Derb.
