The International Red Cross

Andrew Sullivan and others have an affinity for the pronouncements of the International Red Cross. Yes, it does much good, but it has ugly blemishes as well. For decades it barred Israel from joining its ranks, objecting to its use of the Star of David, i.e., bowing to the demands of the anti-Semites. It’s not my moral compass and it knows nothing of U.S. national security considerations. However, by pointing to the IRC, Andrew apparently adopts the IRC’s definition of torture, which includes loud noise, stress positions, and temperature variations. This is an irresponsible position, but at least now we have a definition Andrew embraces.
