Involving the Parents

Michael New has done research suggesting that pro-life laws–especially restrictions on taxpayer funding of abortion, but also such policies as parental-consent and parental-notification laws–reduce the abortion rate among the affected population. The Guttmacher Institute, a spin-off from Planned Parenthood, has tried to debunk his research on parental-involvement laws, and Dr. New has now fired back. One of the institute’s points is that some teens who want to get abortions without notifying their parents can go to other states to bypass their home states’ laws. It is not clear how big this effect is, but isn’t it a reason to spread parental-involvement laws to other states rather than to oppose the concept altogether?
