The recent University of Iowa poll that put Mitt Romney in the lead with 36 percent in Iowa seems a bit of an outlier. A new American Research Group poll puts Romney at 27 percent – one of the five polls this month that have him between 24 and 29 percent in Iowa. So 36 percent seems a little much. In addition, the new ARG poll has Huckabee at 19 percent, which might be a little high for him, but with that poll, the Real Clear Politics average of Iowa polls now has Huckabee in second place, slightly ahead of Giuliani and Thompson. The other news in the new ARG poll is a good number for John McCain – 14 percent, up from single-digits in other polls. I spent time with McCain in Iowa late last week, and he was well received (the story will be in the new issue of the magazine available Friday). Certainly his camp will be hoping that the poll is proof that his attention to the state might be beginning to pay off.
