The International Transport Worker’s Federation and the International Trade Union Confederation report that Mansour Osanlou, the Iranian Lech Walesa, has just been re-arrested. Osanlou organized the first independent union in Iran in over 20 years. When workers demanded basic rights at Gdansk, Reagan stood on principle against the the State Department which suggested that any support for Solidarity would undercut prospects for détente with the Soviet Union. Today, the same arguments occur within the administration, but George W. Bush is silent. Rather than stand for the freedom and liberty of ordinary people in Iran, his silence gives tacit approval to the actions of their tormentors.
