In Iraq, Two Sources of Help

An officer in Iraq e-mailed me this morning about an article in the New York Times — and did not e-mail to make a criticism. The article, here, is about the Yazidis, a religious group in Iraq. The last line quotes a village elder. And it is this: “‘We have nobody to ask for help,’ Mr. Hammo said, ‘except God and the American Army.’” That is almost unbearably telling.
