The acting commissioner of the IRS, Steven Miller, today apologized for the agency’s singling out of tea-party and patriot groups. “The American public deserves better,” he said, but maintained that the targeting was “not an act of partisanship.”
“Foolish mistakes were made by people trying to be more efficient in their workload selection,” he said.
Miller announced his resignation on Wednesday, telling colleagues in a letter that his acting assignment ends in early June. He has been serving in the position since the departure of former IRS commissioner Douglas Shulman, who was appointed by George W. Bush.
