IRS Scandal Keeps Growing

The Associated Press reports that acting IRS commissioner Steven Miller knew about the agency’s inappropriate targeting of conservative groups as early as May 2012. Miller, however, declined to mention that fact in a letter to Congress the following month. A number of Republican lawmakers, including Senator Marco Rubio and Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, have called on Miller to resign.

Additionally, ProPublica revealed today that the same IRS office that targeted conservative groups seeking tax-exempt status handed over confidential documents from a number of those groups in December 2012. The IRS gave ProPublica copies of nine applications from conservative groups that were still pending at the time. Such documents are not supposed to be made public until they are formally approved.
