In his “Impromptus” column today, Jay Nordlinger passes comment on the Iranian president’s remarks about how, if the Europeans really did such a horrible thing as the Holocaust (President Nutso doesn’t really believe they did, but we’ll discuss that point another time), then a homeland for the Jews should have been carved out of Europe, not the Middle East.
Leaving aside all the holes in the logic there, someone should point out that one European, or at least Eurasian, nation, or at least empire, actually did establish a Jewish homeland on its territory. That was the old USSR, and the “homeland” was the Birobidzhan Jewish Autonomous Region in (can you guess?) far Siberia. They are still in business, and even have a website.
Perhaps the Iranian president could get himself invited on a state visit…
