The Miami Herald story about the official who shot himself is weird and tragic. But what a terribly self-absorbed comment from the reporter who was fired for illegally taping a phone conversation that evidently led to the guy suicide:
In a statement released Wednesday night, Defede said, “In this tense
situation, I made a mistake. The Miami Herald executives only learned about
it because I came to them and admitted it. I told them I was willing to
accept a suspension and apologize both to the newsroom and our readers.
Unfortunately the Herald decided on the death penalty.”
I know people often say the inappropriate thing in inappropriate situations, but the death penalty?! A man’s actually dead.
