Readers keep telling me that the difference with Edwards — the reason why he is becoming persona non grata and others, say Bill Clinton, haven’t — is that he lied about the sex. Uh. I did not have sexual relations with that woman, Miss Lewinsky. The problem, it seems to me — and the point of my piece — is we don’t know what we believe in anymore when it comes to love marriage.
When I say “we,” I mean the takeaway from so much of our culture and our politics and our institutions. Now, of course, marriage has been a winning issue for conservatives, in say, the 2006 elections. And to varying degrees, some churches are clear on what it is. But we’re a schizo world. And we’re raising boys who will become men who will meet girls who become women who are all living in this mess of a culture. We know better and we know how to be good and how to challenge one another. But we don’t do enough of it and until we do, we can’t be shocked when we have a John Edwards among us acting as he has.
