It’s Okay to Be Grateful for Your Life

Abortion is so pernicious. A college professor (at a Catholic school) writes in the Baltimore Sun about her life as an adoptee. Obviously, it’s best if a biological mother and father raise their children in a marriage. Sometimes that can’t happen. These days, meth addiction is high on the list of situations that make it difficult, as Darcy Olsen from Gen Justice will tell you.

The writer doesn’t know all the circumstances that led to her going into foster care and eventually being adopted. She’s grateful to her parents, who raised her. But after sharing aspects of her life — including eventually meeting her birth father, but never her birth mother — and expressing gratitude that she’s alive, she throws in that her birth mother should have had the right to abort her.

Here’s the final paragraph:

I will never know how her life might have been different if she had not had me or my brother, or if she wanted to keep us. I am blessed to have been raised by good and loving parents. Still, I wish the woman who bore me had been able to make decisions about her own body, whatever those decisions might have been.

Life is precious. One person’s life is unique and unrepeatable and worthy of protection. It’s okay to be grateful to be alive. It’s okay to protect unborn children from being killed. Life is messy. Which is why we need to help one another more. Abortion is our cultural cop-out; instead of helping moms, legal abortion lies to women and and insists that they are not mothers and that a mother killing her child in an abortion is insignificant. Women deserve better. Human life is worth legal protection. Life is never insignificant.
