The Corner

It’s Only Human

I earnestly recommend the Templeton Foundation discussion on human nature here. David Brooks is the moderator. The other participants are psychologists Michael Gazzaniga and Jonathan Haidt, and philosopher Steven Quartz.

David Brooks is a bit of a surprise. I’ve seen him speak a couple of times, and even been co-speaker with him once, and he struck me as a cold fish. Here he’s funny and charming. I also feel a bit better about the Templeton Foundation, which I’ve formerly held in some suspicion as a circle-squaring exercise. They came through nicely on this one, though. Nothing very new if you follow human-nature studies (***T*H*E*R*E*  *I*S*  *A*  *W*H*O*L*E*  *C*H*A*P*TE*R*  *O*N*  *T*H*E*  *T*O*P*I*C*  *I*N*  *M*Y*  *F*O*R*T*H*C*O*M*I*N*G*  *B*O*O*K***) but a very digestible presentation of how leading researchers are thinking, and some good jokes.
