Jamie Foxx: Will Smith, Kanye West and I Must Be New Civil-Rights Leaders

Actor Jamie Foxx is calling on his colleagues to take up the mantle of Martin Luther King, Jr.

Speaking at the 50th anniversary celebration of the March on Washington, Foxx pointed to a dinner with Harry Belafonte as the event that caused him to realize he and his peers must follow in the footsteps of civil rights leaders like King, Jesse Jackson, and Al Sharpton. During their dinner, said Foxx, Belafonte described marching with “Al, Jesse, and Martin” as a young man, but Foxx and his daughter didn’t recognize the names.

“What we need to do is the young folks pick it up now so when we’re 87 years-old talking to the other young folks, we can say it was me, Will Smith, Jay-Z, Kanye [West], Alicia Keyes, Kerry Washington, the list goes on and on,” Foxx said.
