Jean-Francois Revel, R.I.P.

Author of Without Marx or Jesus, How Democracies Perish, and Democracy Against Itself, Revel was a major figure in the tiny but glorious world of European anti-anti-Americanism

“In 1970, after the first of many visits to America, Revel published _Without Marx or Jesus: The New American Revolution_, in which he predicted that the great revolution of the 20th century would turn out to be the ‘liberal revolution’ of multi-party democracy and market economics, rather than the ‘Socialist revolution’ of Left-wing theory. This revolution would take place not in Cuba, but in California.”

[Derb]  We have a somewhat different perspective on all this now, as California trends towards a Cuban style of Latino socialism, but it was brave stuff at the time.
