Reflecting on the passing of former South African president Nelson Mandela’s, Rev. Jesse Jackson argued that the apartheid regime Mandela spent decades battling continues to exist both in South Africa and the United States. “We’re in the middle of the end of the apartheid struggle even now, but it’s just changed phases,” Jackson told NBC’s David Gregory.

The steps toward racial equality achieved in the U.S. civil rights movement and through Mandela’s anti-apartheid efforts succeeded in making advances only on the ”surface level”; racial disparities in poverty and educational achievement are a testament to the fact that “apartheid remains.”
