Appearing on Arsenio Hall’s talk show over the weekend, Jesse Jackson defended both President Obama, who he said has faced heretofore unseen advsersity as president, as well as Jackson’s embattled son, who he said “had the best voting record in the Congress” before he was sentenced by unfair laws.
On the president, Jackson praised him for “serving us well against the most hostility an American president has ever had” and “more attempts to derail his legislation then in the history of the country.” Between job creation and his efforts in Iraq, President Obama has “maintained a kind of dignity” without stooping to the “garbage” of his critics, Jackson said.
When asked about his son, former Illinois congressman Jesse Jackson, Jr., who was sentenced for violating campaign-finance laws earlier this year, the elder Jackson conceded his son’s error, although he took issue with the punishment. He said that his son’s use of campaign funds for personal expenditures should have required him to return the money, rather than step down from office and go to prison.
Additionally, Jackson criticized “the two sets of rules” that put his son in prison for a $700,000 campaign-finance violation while JP Morgan Chase’s $14 billion settlement for selling high-risk mortgage securities, for example, resulted in no jail-time for the executives involved.
