The Corner

Jimmy C. (Again)

I have had this thought at other Democratic conventions — and I’d like to share it with you. The speakers cite the great (or allegedly great) Democratic presidents. They hail FDR, Truman, and JFK (most often). And they never mention Carter: and Carter sits there and listens to this, as he did in Denver. I’ve often wondered how he feels.

They mention Clinton a fair amount — usually crediting him for the gangbusters economy of the ’90s.

One time, a speaker did mention Carter, when he was reeling off a list of Democratic presidents and their accomplishments. That was Mario Cuomo, in 1984. (Remember that lavishly praised, nauseating keynote?) He said something about Carter and “the near-miraculous Camp David accords” (I am going from memory). And Carter couldn’t help grinning to beat the band.
