It never made any sense to take down Speaker Mike Johnson, and after some dramatic arm-twisting to bring back a couple of defectors, Johnson got over the top on the initial ballot. Good. With some hiccups, he’s done a commendable job in difficult circumstances. His critics can’t explain how anyone else would do any better with this kind of narrow majority. But this vote, and the turmoil over the CR at the end of the year, demonstrates how very little is going to be easy in this Congress.
