Johnson Update

Per Roll Call:

Sen. Tim Johnson (D-S.D.) has been diagnosed with a congenital blood disorder known as arteriovenous malformation, or AVM, and remains in critical condition following emergency surgery last night.

Sources indicated the Senator’s condition is better than initially feared. He is being treated at George Washington University Hospital but it remains unclear how long it will take or whether Johnson will fully recover.

“Subsequent to his admission to George Washington University Hospital yesterday, Senator Tim Johnson was found to have an intracerebral bleed caused by a congenital arteriovenous malformation,” John Eisold, the Capitol’s Attending Physician, said in a statement Thursday morning.

Eisold said the surgery to “evacuate the blood and stabilize the malformation” was successful.

“The Senator is recovering without complication in the critical care unit at George Washington University Hospital,” he added. “It is premature to determine whether further surgery will be required or to assess any long term prognosis.”

According to the Mayo Clinic, a cerebral arteriovenous malformation “is a disorder of the blood vessels in the brain, in which an abnormal connection exists between arteries and veins.”
