At a reception Wednesday evening, DNC chair Ken Martin introduced [former vice president Kamala Harris’ husband] Emhoff as the former second gentleman and quipped that he could be the future first gentleman, people who heard the remarks told Axios.
Axios contends that Harris’ appearance at the Democratic National Committee’s winter meeting is a sign she is “stepping toward another White House run.”
Even more bizarrely, it appears that the former vice president is test-driving a message painting herself as an outsider challenging the status quo.
“Both parties have failed to hold the public’s trust,” Harris said. “Government is viewed as fundamentally unable to meet the needs of its people…. People are done with the status quo and they’re ready to break things to force change.”
“We cannot afford to be nostalgic for a flawed system that failed so many,” she added, arguing that President Trump is a “symptom” of a bigger problem.
After the speech, some committee members told Axios they want Harris to run in 2028 — and that when Harris mentioned “the future” during her speech, someone shouted, “You!”
If the Democratic Party wants a presidential nominee who is an outsider who is ready to challenge the status quo, they have a lot of options who have been a lot further from power than the person who was vice president for four years, and who are fresher faces and better communicators, and who have not already lost to Donald Trump after having the nomination handed to them in midsummer.
