Senator Harris originally said, rather blithely, that we should eliminate private insurance. Her campaign has subsequently clarified that she was willing to support health-care legislation that expanded coverage without eliminating private insurance.
Who is that clarification supposed to reassure? All it means is that she wants to kick people off their insurance plans and get them into government plans, but will settle for less. If the political problem her initial comment raised was that Democrats would worry that she will be too ideologically rigid to pass a bill, this clarification would address it. But the actual political problem is that voters at large will worry that Harris will, well, kick them off their insurance and put them on a government plan. The clarification does very little to address that problem.
