Karl Rove was on Fox giving Michelle’s speech low marks for being by the numbers and lacking personal touch. Others found it contrived. But my impression is that Michelle conveyed warmth, dignity and presence. Compare her to Karenna Gore in 2000 who came across as smug, and Theresa Heinz in 2004 who seemed half baked and self absorbed. Michelle Obama is an impressive performer, particularly for a civilian. Yes, she’s gotten a lot of practice on the campaign trail. But commanding a hall of 20,000 people is no easy feat, and she accomplished it with ease.
