Keeping a Culture

Portrait of Benjamin Franklin (detail) by Joseph Duplessis, c. 1875 (National Portrait Gallery via Wikimedia)

On Tuesday, at 5 p.m., our Jay Nordlinger will give a talk at the University of Arizona. The talk is part of the Voices of Culture Lecture Series. Jay’s talk is titled “A Culture, If You Can Keep It.” For information, go here.

Jay’s title, as you know, alludes to a remark made by Benjamin Franklin — at least according to lore. As Franklin was leaving Independence Hall, upon the conclusion of the Constitutional Convention, someone shouted out, “Doctor, what have we got? A republic or a monarchy?” Franklin responded — again, this is lore — “A republic, if we can keep it.”

At the U of A, Jay will talk about the arts, in particular, and, even more particularly, about music. There are many threats to music, as to the other arts: identity politics, indifference, class warfare, etc.

William F. Buckley Jr. intended a magazine of politics and culture, both, and this is a mission we are pleased to further.
