Khamenei Warns Against U.S. Intervention

Iranian leaders, including supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, said Wednesday that the United States will suffer greatly if it intervenes in Syria.

Khamenei told the country’s new cabinet that the United States would “suffer damages similar to when they interfered in Iraq and Afghanistan,” and said the expected intervention would be “like lighting a spark in a large gunpowder keg, with unclear and unspecified outcomes and consequences.”

Meanwhile, the speaker of the Iranian legislature echoed warnings from other parliamentarians yesterday that Israel would suffer retaliation in the event of a U.S. intervention.

Iranian president Hassan Rowhani, who assumed office earlier this month, struck a less belligerent tone and criticized only the idea of intervention, warning it would lead to further radicalism.

“The people of the world and especially the Middle East cannot tolerate another war, and any new adventure in this region will deeply affect world peace and stability and only lead to the expansion of radicalism and terrorism,” he said.
