The collapse in Republican favorability over the shutdown was inevitable, Charles Krauthammer said Friday night.

Speaking during his regular panel appearance on Special Report, Krauthammer decried the shutdown as leverage, citing the damage it has done to perceptoins of Republicans, declaring that the fallout was “wasn’t only predictable, it was predicted.”

The GOP’s trump card is the debt limit, Krauthammer said, which is why President Obama is negotiating “even though he pretends not to.” Republicans need to stick to a short extension of the debt limit, he said, because that’s where the leverage is.
