Labels Everywhere

Have a look at the first full paragraph of James Capretta’s post on “The Demise of the Omnibus“, just below my recent “False Labels” post. Capretta is making a point about deceptive Democratic intentions, false labeling if you will, parallel to the point of my post. Now have a look at the first sentence of Amity Shlaes post on “God and Man and the Tax Bill.” Shlaes is worried about labels too, although in this case the issue of disguise seems to be mixed in with problems of faulty policy. At any rate, three virtually simultaneous posts make the point that much of politics turns around labels. We don’t so much need to get rid of them as we need to get a firm handle on what they are and ought to be.
